Route 66

Throwing Star
The series that convinced the great David Morrell to become a writer.

A prime time, Beat adventure story, Tod and Buzz are restless youths out to find work and enjoy the open road, and end up coming face to face with the good, bad and ugly across the US. Allegedly the first TV show filmed on location every week, the stark, sparse, and evocative black and white series, complete with Nelson Riddle's snazzy theme music, is a trip, you dig? Stirling Silliphant's scripts are crisp and clean but jam packed with thematic and symbolic resonance you just don't catch on much TV these days. They seem like little movies.

And creepy ones.

We watched the first episode of the series, Black November, last night. Our heroes, Buzz and Todd, bust the steering mechanism of their groovy corvette and need help from a tiny nowhere town living under the jackboot of the local boss. The town is mired in secrets and the threat of violence at the newcomers permeates every beat, until Buzz and Todd help redeem the locals from their tainted past.

It's a weird, compelling, stark and engaging show that naturally reminds me of some Twilight Zone episodes. But Route 66 is much more understated and taut, because Silliphant and Rod Serling are two very different writers. I'm hooked. Looking forward to the next town and adventure.

And the theme music is just such a gas!
